Filling

Canned Apple Pie Filling – Be sure to get the one with more fruit for extra apple goodness. Check the label!

Butter Pecan Streusel

Flour – Use all-purpose.

Brown Sugar – To sweeten the streusel. Be sure to use brown sugar here – its deep, caramel-like flavor pairs beautifully with cinnamon and apples.

Ground Cinnamon – Just a pinch adds fragrance and aroma to the topping.

Cold Butter – Cutting in cold butter with the ingredients yields a crumbly mixture. When baked, it becomes nice and crunchy on the outside and bursts with buttery goodness on the inside.

Flour: Again, just use whichever all-purpose flour you prefer.

How to Make Cinnamon Roll Dutch Apple Pie

1. Prepare the oven and the cinnamon rolls.

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Split the dough into 8. Set them on the counter and allow them to come to room temperature, for about 10 minutes.

Pour the icing into a microwave-safe bowl, cover, and refrigerate it. You won’t need it until you’re ready to serve the pie.

2. Make the butter pecan streusel.

Whisk together the flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a bowl.

Cut in the cold butter using a fork or pastry blender until crumbly. Stir in the pecans.

3. Prepare the crust.

Flatten the cinnamon rolls with a rolling pin until they’re about 3 1/2 inches in diameter.

You want the rolls nice and flat as they’ll puff up when baking. You won’t want an overly thick crust!

Place one roll in the center of your pie plate. Arrange the remaining rolls around it.

Press the rolls firmly into the bottom and sides of the pie plate. Be sure the entire plate is covered and there are no gaps.

4. Add the filling and topping.

Spoon the canned apple pie filling into the crust. Remember, get the kind with more fruit!

Sprinkle the prepared butter pecan streusel evenly on top.

5. Bake the pie.

Bake it for 20 to 23 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown.

If you notice the crust browning too much too quickly, cover them with a pie shield or with strips of foil.

6. Let the pie cool 🙁

The hardest part is having to wait for the pie to cool.

The aroma of cinnamon rolls and baked apples wafting in the air is almost torture!

But yeah, have the patience to wait an hour before slicing in.

The pie filling needs time to set. Otherwise, it’ll just be a syrupy mess.

7. Prepare the icing.

Pop the icing in the microwave, for about 10-15 seconds on high.

8. Slice, serve, and enjoy.

Once the pie has cooled, drizzle the icing on top.

Slice it up and serve it with vanilla or butter pecan ice cream. Enjoy!

Soft and Fruity Cinnamon Roll Dutch Apple Pie

Tips and Tricks

  • Prepare the cinnamon roll dough before you start. That way, it’ll be perfectly warmed up and ready to go.
  • Flatten the cinnamon roll dough very thinly. It’ll rise while baking, so you don’t want it too thick.
  • If you notice the crust’s edges browning way too quickly in the oven, cover them with a pie shield, or if you don’t have one, use strips of foil.
  • Want to use real apples for your filling? Just peel and cut up 7-8 cups of apples and season with cinnamon. Use Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples for the perfect balance of flavor.
  • If you’re using real apples, bake the pie for 50 to 60 minutes.
  • Serve the pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. It’s always better a la mode!

Can I Freeze Cinnamon Roll Dutch Apple Pie?

Absolutely. In fact, this freezer-friendly pie keeps well for up to 6 months.

So go ahead and double or triple the recipe and have a steady supply of apple pie for half a year!

To freeze, simply wrap the pie with plastic wrap and aluminum foil and freeze.

Let it thaw in the fridge or on the countertop and enjoy!
